Justin to the Rescue
Friday, June 18, 2010 at 12:05PM
Researchers at the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics at DLR, the German Aerospace Center, are exploring ways in which to use Justin, a humanoid space robot, to fix orbiting satellites -- or maybe knock them out of orbit altogether.
Justin is wired to a human for control, and "force feedback systems" tell the operator when the android's hands or limbs have contacted an object, such as a tool.
Although NASA is working on a similar project, their bot will likely work mainly on International Space Station projects and upgrades. Meanwhile, Justin will have its own satellite, giving him more manueverability in orbit.
