Nervous backseat drivers may soon ride in ease thanks to General Motors.Tel Aviv University and General Motors' research division in Israel have partnered to develop in-vehicle cameras that can detect and alert drivers to threats.
Ultimately, the researchers want the system to recognize people, differentiate them from other moving objects, be aware of its surroundings and be able to alert drivers instantaneously.
Prof. Shai Avidan, Tel Aviv University's faculty of engineering, has already helped MobilEye, an Israeli company, develop a smart camera system that can detect vehicles and track them in real time.
