We’ve all been there: You’re heading out on the town with your friends, with several different destinations to choose from. In the past, you would have to stop by each one to find out which was dead, which was happening and which was an all-out sausage-fest.
Now, SceneTap is making all that searching obsolete. The service, which will be available soon, uses facial recognition technology to tell users how many people are at a given bar and the bar’s current male-to-female ratio, helping you to decide whether it’s a good fit for you and your entourage.
On a broader scale, SceneTap will also keep you informed on bars in the area, where people your age are hanging out and what the scene looks like down the street.
How does the free app work? Bars will set up cameras at their entrances and exits, SceneTap’s CEO explains. The facial recognition software doesn’t identify individuals or store their images; all it does is recognize whether a person is a man or a woman.
Already, 200 bars across the country have signed on, with more than 50 bars in SceneTap’s home base of Chicago agreeing to be tapped.
