Starbucks Takes on Augmented Reality ... But Why?
Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 1:57PM Prepare yourselves to be amazed. Starbucks is launching a ... wait for it ... augmented reality app that makes its red to-go cups come to life. Amazing! Or, in my opinion, already tired.
Cup Magic, which will be available for download next week, "surprises and delights" customers with holiday characters, snowy scenes and fun interaction. The app lets users share their AR videos through social media and send e-cards, which ups the interactive aspect a bit.
However, I just don't think Starbucks customers will use the app. Maybe I've just been reading about AR apps for too long -- but do they still seem innovative and interesting to most? Will coffee drinkers really "interact" with their cups, share with their friends and--as I'm sure Starbucks is hoping--draw in more holiday business?
On the other hand, Amazon's point-and-buy augmented reality app? Now that adds some value to my life!
