Raytheon Unveils Scorpion Helmet Technology
Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at 11:22AM
U.S. defense company Raytheon Inc. introduces Scorpion helmet technology for F-16 and A-10 combat jets. The helmut transmits data from a single-eye monocle attached to an existing helmet to the flight controls.
The monocle features both color and night capability to a pilot's field of vision, allowing a pilot to cue up weapons and access data from both on-board and remote sensors. The small size of the unit means that there's no noticeable extra weight on the pilot's head during long missions.
Capabilites of the technology includes deploying weapons. For example, a sensor attached to a helmt can spot an enemy target and relay the information to the flight controls, allowing the pilot to fire immediately without turning the aircraft.
