G20 Investigation Gets High-tech
Thursday, July 8, 2010 at 11:20AM
Police in Toronto are using facial recognition technology to identify hundreds of looters and other criminals who were caught on camera during the recent G20 summit. Some of the suspects smashed store windows, while others burned police cruisers.
According to the Toronto Sun, detectives are seeking photographs or video that might help them identify the perpetrators. Det.-Sgt. Gary Giroux said he and his team will use facial recognition technology that’s usually used in the banking and casino industries in Ontario to inspect the evidence.
Giroux said images from cameras in downtown stores and businesses are being collected and assessed by detectives, who are also going through Facebook and other social websites for clues.
