Move Over, Hasselhoff; E.M.I.L.Y. is Here!
Monday, June 28, 2010 at 3:07PM
Zuma Beach lifeguards in Malibu, Calif., will be getting some help from E.M.I.L.Y (EMergency Integrated Lifesaving lanYard), a robotic lifeguard developed by Hydronalix. She employs Navy technology that allows her to swim 28 mph and can locate distressed swimmers through sonar detection. She can travel up to 80 miles on a single charge.
A lifeguard uses a remote control to steer E.M.I.L.Y. to distressed swimmers, who can use her as a flotation device to get back to shore. On-board speakers also allow the lifeguard to calm swimmers.
By next spring, E.M.I.L.Y. should be able to rescue swimmers independently.
