‘Zombie’ Satellite Threatens Other Spacecraft
Monday, May 3, 2010 at 12:21PM
Image: Orbital SciencesAfter being knocked out of orbit by an intense solar storm in April, an Intelstat satellite is drifting eastward, threatening other satellites in its path.
The Galaxy 15 communications satellite has remained fully “on” while it has been out of orbit, which industry officials say is an unprecedented event. Luckily satellite operators already know how to deal with “zombie” satellites that threaten other spacecraft. In fact, they estimate there are 25 or so other wandering satellites circling the globe. Today, Intelstat will blast Galaxy 15 with a powerful signal in an attempt to force it into a complete shutdown.
