The World’s Fastest Robot
Monday, April 26, 2010 at 8:13AM The Adept Quattro is a packaging and assembly robot that moves faster than any other robot—or human—on Earth. At this month’s National Robotics Week, attendees were encouraged to go toe-to-toe with the Quattro to determine who is faster: man or machine.
Each challenger sought to move a sliding platform with a Wii remote faster than the Quattro could follow and pick pieces off of it. As you can see in the video, the humans were no match for the blindingly fast robot.

interesting. I know I'm being kind of stupid about it, but do you really think this is an exhibition of the robot being 'faster' than a human?
While it's clearly fast - and no way could a human do what it's doing - IMO it is more a display of a precision tracking and positioning system that simply makes the 'picker' part of the robot go to where the human currently has the component it picks up from. As soon as it 'places' what its previously 'picked'. Wicked fast.
If you notice the human is simply rolling the wii left and right - and there is clear latency in the movement of the part that the wii is controlling.
If they integrated it with Deep Blue it would be a formidable opponent in speed chess... :)
I agree that this challenge might not be entirely fair in matching up human vs. robot -- especially with the Wii remote lagging a little.
And what if the contest were done on a two-dimensional plane, instead of one? The Quattro probably wouldn't stand a chance.

Aw, this was a really quality post. In theory I'd like to write like this too - taking time and real effort to make a good article... but what can I say... I procrastinate alot and never seem to get something done.
