Driverless Cars Becoming More of a Reality
Friday, April 23, 2010 at 9:39AM
The sci-fi-inspired dream of driverless cars is becoming a little more viable thanks to researchers at North Carolina State University. They’re developing software that relies completely on computer vision programming to enable a car’s computer to learn what it’s looking at—whether the object in front of it is a stop sign or a pedestrian, for example.
The technology will be able to keep a car within its lane, maintain a safe distance away from other vehicles and even read signs.
The technology is an improvement on current vision systems for driverless cars, which typically can only find lanes.
